What to do right now

• Keep people and pets away from the slide and out of rooms right below or beside it.

• If walls are cracking, doors suddenly jam or you hear creaking, leave the house and call 911.

• Keep water off the slope: turn off irrigation and point downspouts away from it.

• Photograph the cracks and the slide with the date. You will want them for your engineer and your records.

• Call us. We can cover the slope temporarily to keep the next storm out while the permanent fix is planned.

How we repair slides

1. Stabilize now. Temporary slide covering, wire netting, erosion control blankets, drainage and shoring to slow or stop the movement.

2. Engineer the fix. We work with your geotechnical engineer and coordinate permits.

3. Repair it for good. We excavate, recompact and rebuild the hillside, then add soldier beam walls, tiebacks, soil nails, sculpted shotcrete, gabion walls, structural concrete walls, Geobrugg netting, lime mixing and dewatering, whatever the engineer specifies.

Why Bay Area hillsides slide

Much of the hilly Bay Area is prone to slides. Most start when heavy rain saturates the soil and it loses its grip. A slide can undermine a house, crack a driveway or road, break drains and fences, take out retaining walls and cross onto a neighbor's property. The longer it moves, the bigger the repair.

Common questions

Is a slide an emergency? Usually not a sudden one. Most slides creep and crack over days or weeks, which gives time to stabilize them and plan a proper repair. Do not ignore one, though: wet weather keeps it moving, and small repairs grow into big ones.

Who do I call first, an engineer or a contractor? Either. We can come out, help with temporary stabilization, and work with your geotechnical engineer on the permanent design.

What if the slide crosses onto my neighbor's property? That is common. Repairs often need the neighbor's written permission, and we coordinate the notices and permits.
